10 Ways to NOT use a Bumbo Baby Seat

    By Beth | October 26, 2007

Okay. I really can’t stop thinking about this Bumbo recall. I’m not saying that I’ve tried ALL of these but I’m pretty sure that most of them are pretty inadvisable:

    1. Do not strap it to the top of your car and use it as an open air car seat.

    2. Do not strap it to your dogs back so baby can go dog-back riding.

    3. Do not place Bumbo on top of your TV while the Philadelphia Eagles are playing.

    4. Do not place Bumbo on rooftop while stargazing.

    5. Do not buy two Bumbos and strap them to your feet to use as snow shoes.

    6. Do not strap Bumbo to the back of your bike and or motorcyle.

    7. Do not attach strings to your Bumbo and suspend it from your ceiling to use as a swing.

    8. Do not use Bumbo as a flotation device.

    9. Do not strap the Bumbo to your back to double as a Snugli.

    10. And finally, please, no matter how hard this one is to resist, do not ever ever ever attach roller-skates to the bottom of your Bumbo and enter your baby in the Bumbo X Games (coming soon on ESPN5).

I’m not saying I tried #10. Really. Okay, so maybe I thought about it. Does that make me a bad mom? Ben really is very courageous for a baby. I mean look at this kid. He is sitting on a tabletop, in a Bumbo, and doesn’t have a care in the world:

It’s nice to read about the Bumbo recall while your kid is sitting in one on the desk next to you at the computer.

Good to know about the open air car seat. We had been looking forward to taking kiddo on some scenic drives before it got too cold, but I guess we’ll just strap him in his car seat the old fashioned way. How boring.

There you go spoiling all the fun. Shall we call you the Bumbo Monitor? I’m glad there will be a recall so that all the parents will discover that leaving babies on the counter is dangerous. I mean, how would they know otherwise? Kind of like how until the following warning was placed on our stroller “Remove child before storing” parents just kind of folded their kids up in the stroller and put them in the trunk. I really hope the kind of warnings we have on products is not truly reflective of the IQ of its users.

Just a quick plug for http://www.bumbosafety.com for the parents who want to learn more about the safe use of the Bumbo and/or order updated warnings and instructions. BTW, I especially like the point about the Eagles…watch out for flying objects near the Bumbo!! Posted by a representative of the manufacturer.

One thing everybody seems to be missing is that the child could easily climb out of Bumbo regardless of where it is used, be it an elevated surface or when it’s on the floor. I hate to say this but it does not restrain the child if you want to take your eyes of the child for a few secs…therefore let alone leaving the child unattended in Bumbo on a counter, you should not even leave them unattended when on the floor. How stupid can parents be these days! My cousin bought a seat for my niece recently on the internet which was shipped from England and it is absolutely brilliant,it’s called Cushi Tush, funny name:) it has a tray and seems very safe…..

I especially like that the baby is up high and next to a cup of coffee! If that child gets burned as he falls into the coffee can you sue the coffe company too?
